There are other ways to teach the heel position, this is just my preferred method. This method teaches the actual position so the dog knows how to get there when they are approaching me from a different angle. Using a barrier, like a wall or length of cabinets, helps your dog to keep their body straight, building muscle memory to always straighten out when they get into that position so that when you do ask for heel, they are not heeling at a diagonal.
